Wicked was originally optioned as a nonmusical film by Universal Pictures. Stephen Schwartz -- the Academy Award and Grammy Award-winning composer/lyricist of Pippin, Godspell, Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt -- was the first person to see the possibilities of Gregory Maguire's novel as a musical, and started a process that would eventually make Wicked tickets what they are today His score for Wicked includes comic numbers, medieval-style choruses, and classical-flavored and pop anthems, including the ballad "Defying Gravity," a song of empowerment that brings down the house every night.
